asiCast 168: 2024 – a pivotal year for the global streamers

If 2023 proved to be a very problematic year for the rapidly-developing streaming market, then 2024 will prove to be pivotal as the major players seek to establish some stability and outline strategies to provide comfort to sceptical investors.

In this asiCast, our Research Director Richard Marks discusses the prospects for the streamers with Guy Bisson, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Ampere Analysis. The end of cheap money has resulted in a retreat from extravagant TV and high-cost scripted content to focus relentlessly on profitability rather than growth at any cost.

What do we mean by Peak TV and is it true to say that the age of Peak TV is over? What are we to make of the latest positive results for Netflix? How important has the introduction of ad tiers been for Netflix and for the wider streaming services?

It may be that the constant chatter about M&A in the sector is overstated as there are plenty of ways the streamers could collaborate and work together. You can listen to Richard’s conversation with Guy here.

Diary date: How the streaming market will evolve in 2024 will be examined at this year’s asi International Television & Video Conference, which will be held in Venice from November 6th to 8th.
