asiCast 200: Television transformed – the Doctor Who case study

In this special 200th anniversary asiCast episode, Chris Mundy, CEO of RSMB, interviews Richard Marks about his upcoming book, The Reality War, which draws upon the history of Doctor Who to examine how, in the twenty years between 2005 and 2025, television was transformed.

Their conversation explores how the series transitioned from analogue broadcasting to a digital, on-demand era. Some of the key themes they discuss include the BBC’s shift toward decentralisation in Wales, the commercial impact of global merchandising, and changing audience demographics. They also address contemporary challenges like social media polarisation, culture wars and the complexities of recent co-production deals with Disney.

Ultimately, the conversation highlights how Doctor Who serves as a vital case study for understanding modern media consumption.

Richard will be speaking at the 2026 asi International Television & Video Conference on 4th to 6th November in Venice, Italy.

His book, The Reality War, can be pre-ordered for £12.99 from Ten Acre Books

If delegates at the Venice Conference would like their copy signed, it may be easiest for UK delegates to order and then bring a copy with them. Richard will bring a small number of copies for international delegates.

The BBC’s 2026 Invitation to Tender for Doctor Who can be found here.
